In December I was really flattered to have my photo “Alone at the Ice Edge” be nominated by Cruising World magazine for the annual Boating Writers International writing and photography contest. And I recently learned that the image earned a Certificate of Merit for the Boating Photography category! Here is a link to an announcement about the awards, with lots of other great stories and images. Congratulations to all the other winners! And here’s the photo:
Also, for those of you who are members of Off Center Harbor.com, I have a new “Guide Post” up about our 2015 voyage to Point Barrow and back. Here’s the link.
Last but not least, Ocean Navigator has posted my most recent article “Sail Fast” online.
That’s all the publication news for now 🙂

Hi Ellen, just thought I would let you know that I have managed to track down an Ikelite housing and a dome port for my Olympus! Just ordered it. As you said, a much more affordable way to get my over/under shots at the reef than having to spend a fortune on a housing for my Canon 7DII! We’ll see how it all goes when we get up north later this year. So a big thanks for the info and the inspiration!

Hi Chris! So glad you managed to find that – thanks for following up and letting me know. I’ll be looking out for the beautiful shots you capture with it!!

Cool photo. I don’t often see photos of icebergs above and below water. That is an interesting perspective.

Thanks very much! Took a lot of shots to get that one, as I’m sure you can imagine!

Thank you! It was actually not a very cold day for the Arctic… but the water was still below freezing!

The pic is such an amazing one, unique and captivating. It’s perfect pic for an outstanding nomination. Congratulations to you both.

Thank you, Viki! So kind of you to say!

Fantastic photo, I can see how it deserves an award. How did you take it? Were you in the water??
March 30, 2017 at 15:02
Thank you, Chris! Yes, the camera was in the water (with an underwater housing and dome port to create that clean line between water and air). Took the photo from the dinghy, though, and with waterproof gloves on, so didn’t get wet!

I have been agonising about getting an underwater housing and dome port for my Canon. Over/under photos don’t come out well with the small Olympus… now you are tilting me towards a purchase! Which housing did you get?
March 30, 2017 at 23:42
This photo was actually taken with a Panasonic Lumix compact with its own Panasonic housing. The dome port and external wide-angle lens took some finding – they came from some outfit in Taiwan – can’t remember the name. I wanted to see how much I would use such a thing without committing a lot of money to it at first. Turns out I really like it, so I just got a package – Canon SL1 with Ikelite housing and dome port. Excited to try it out soon! I think you really can’t shoot under/overs without a dome port. Just doesn’t turn out right. The Canon/Ikelite package didn’t completely break the bank, either, like a housing for a 6D or 5D would.

Thanks for the info, Ellen.
